This essay examines that metaphor in the context of the political and war situation at the time Lysistrata was first performed. It considers traditional gender roles in the fifth-century Greek polis and Lysistrata’s inversion of those roles in her weaving analogy. Aristophanes’ comedic purpose in the weaving speech, in Lysistrata as a whole, and more generally across his corpus is examined. In addition, some observations are made about the sound pattern of Lysistrata’s speech and, in a personal argument, a speculative suggestion is advanced that the audience might have associated her cadences with the familiar rhythms of a domestic weaving loom.

Theatricality, didacticism, prosaic verse, use of persons as symbols, contemplative mood, flashbacks are some of Cavafy’s recurring ‘tropes’. Discuss.

Within the vast poetry collection of Constantine Cavafy, arguably, a pattern of recurring tropes emerges, offering the readers an in depth understanding of what defines his artistry. The poems that I have chosen for this essay being Young Men of Sidon, Alexandrian Kings and Kaisarion, from his book The Collected poems. One might say that they serve as an example of Cavafy’s gravitation towards an array of literary devices such as theatricality, didacticism, prosaic verse, use of persons as symbols, contemplative mood and flashbacks, one might say that they create a narrative that extends beyond the individual poems, inviting us to explore the timeless themes captured by Cavafy.

How does Seferis’ mythical method interact with Greece’s lasting socio-political issues?

Seferis uses the mythical method in his poetry to allude to and comment upon social and political issues in Greece in his lifetime. Before discussing his poetry, it is important to define what is meant by Seferis’ mythical method. This method can be described as allusive, as although Seferis does make direct references to myth he does so in inventive ways, for example by using narrative space, symbols and characters to evoke Greek myths.

Yannis Ritsos' "Moonlight Sonata" is a poignant and emotionally charged poem that presents a deeply intimate monologue of a woman speaking to a silent young man. The setting is night, with the moonlight casting a dreamlike atmosphere over the scene. The woman's confession, filled with personal revelations, memories, and emotions, evokes a variety of sentiments in the reader and provokes a complex response.

The form of Dramatic Monologue as perfected by Ritsos’ poetry.

Yannis Ritsos is widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in contemporary Greek poetry. He managed to revolutionise the idea of a dramatic monologue and create not just beautiful poetry, but also a multifaceted art form that has depth on psychological, social, and philosophical levels throughout all of his publications. The dramatic monologue form was popularised by Victorian poets such as Robert Browning, but Ritsos revitalised it and many poets to this day still use his style as inspiration. His ability to construct identities and characters that the reader can genuinely sense and almost experience is skilful.

Today we stand at the threshold of major choices. The issue of security has never been as present and multi-faceted; our deliberations over the future of Europe continue unabated. We trust that the contribution of the European Convention will reflect the aspirations of our citizens. The distribution of competences, the simplification of the European Treaties and the role of the national Parliaments are certainly issues we urgently continue to address. We should not let this urgency blur the clarity of the vision we have for the Europe of the future:

  • to create a political Europe, based on commitment and solidarity,
  • to address effectively the issues on security, both internal and external
  • to further extend the amount of economic freedom in our societies,
  • to lay the groundwork for the flourishing of individual creativity and private enterprise,
  • to make sure that the rule of law must be applied in all activities,
  • to fight bureaucracy and skepticism and
  • to promote transparency in order to meet our citizen ‘s needs:

this continues to be our European vision. This is what is needed in order to bring the amazing story of European integration to a higher level.

Πέντε στόχοι για την τετραετία. Μια απόφαση για το μέλλον           

Για να επιταχύνουμε την ανάπτυξη και να εμπεδώσουμε την ανθρώπινη ασφάλεια στο πλαίσιο της

συμμετοχικής δημοκρατίας που οραματιζόμαστε, θα κινηθούμε τολμηρά και αποφασιστικά προς πέντε κατευθύνσεις:

α) Επένδυση στον άνθρωπο και προτεραιότητα στην απασχόληση. Στη συνεχή επένδυση στον άνθρωπο, ιδιαίτερα στους νέους μας, ώστε μέσα από σύγχρονες και ποιοτικές υπηρεσίες εκπαίδευσης, επανεκπαίδευσης, κατάρτισης και δια βίου μάθησης να μπορεί να διευρύνει τις επιλογές του και να αντιμετωπίζει την πρόκληση της ένταξης του στην αγορά εργασίας με αυτοπεποίθηση και σιγουριά.

β) Ανθρώπινη ασφάλεια: Κοινωνική συνοχή και κοινωνική πολιτική. Στη διεύρυνση της κοινωνικής συνοχής με μια ολοκληρωμένη πολιτική καταπολέμησης της φτώχειας, του κοινωνικού αποκλεισμού και των μεγάλων ανισοτήτων στην κατανομή εισοδήματος και πλούτου, στη διασφάλιση ποιοτικών υπηρεσιών παιδείας, υγείας και κοινωνικής ασφάλισης και στην ενδυνάμωση των συστημάτων πρόνοιας και κοινωνικής προστασίας.

γ) Διεύρυνση της παραγωγικής ικανότητας σε ανταγωνιστική και βιώσιμη βάση. Στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη με την προώθηση διαρθρωτικών πολιτικών που θα βελτιώσουν τόσο την παραγωγική μας ικανότητα μέσα στο διεθνές ανταγωνιστικό περιβάλλον, όσο και την ποιότητα ζωής στην ύπαιθρο και στα αστικά μας κέντρα.

δ) Μακροοικονομική σταθερότητα και αναπτυξιακή διαχείριση πόρων. Στη διατήρηση και περαιτέρω ενίσχυση της μακροοικονομικής σταθερότητας ώστε το εισόδημά μας να διατηρήσει την αγοραστική του αξία και συγχρόνως η χώρα μας να γίνει πόλος έλξης νέων επιχειρηματικών και καινοτομικών δραστηριοτήτων.

ε) Νέο πρότυπο διακυβέρνησης. Στην ενδυνάμωση των δομών διοίκησης και των αποκεντρωμένων συμμετοχικών θεσμών σ' όλη την Ελλάδα, ώστε σε κάθε γωνιά της χώρας μας ο πολίτης να αισθάνεται ότι συμμετέχει στη λήψη των αποφάσεων που τον αφορούν και να συνδιαμορφώνει το αναπτυξιακό αποτέλεσμα μέσα από μηχανισμούς πλήρους διαφάνειας.

Πέντε δέσμες πολιτικών για τη βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη και την ανθρώπινη ασφάλεια. Για μια Ελλάδα ισχυρή στην Ευρώπη και στον κόσμο.

Μια μόνο απόφαση. Για μια Ελλάδα αισιόδοξη, ισχυρή και ανθρώπινη στην πρωτοπορία της Ενωμένης Ευρώπης. Με τη Δημοκρατική Παράταξη οδηγό στα όνειρα, συμμέτοχη στη δημιουργία, άξια στη συνείδηση και στην καρδιά των Ελλήνων
